Calcutta: Kareem Omolaja Nurain of Nigeria has been named captain of Mohammedan Sporting for their second division I-League campaign, beginning on Saturday.

Relegated to the second tier of the I-League, due to lack to necessary infrastructure, Mohammedan Sporting are taking this challenge seriously and are eager to qualify for the top tier, according to Sultan Ahmed, the club president.

Announcing the 25-member squad at the club tent here on Thursday, he said: "The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has given us a chance. We are serious about it. We want to qualify again for the top tier. Playing in the second division will give us time to meet the requirements laid down by the Asian Football Council (AFC) for playing the I-League.

"We are doing things slowly. But we can't give a time limit now. Our resources are limited," he said.

Mohammedan Sporting will open their campaign on Saturday, against Guwahati FC. The match will be played at the Barasat Stadium.

Experienced coach Subhas Bhowmick is in charge of the Guwahati outfit. Asked if that would make a difference, Mohammedan Sporting coach, Subrata Bhattacharya Jr, replied in the negative. "The coach will not play. He can only perform a role up to a certain level. Its the players who will have to deliver on the ground. I am confident my team will be as good as any other team in the championship," he said.
