Calcutta: The clouds of uncertainty that were hovering over Khalid Jamil's future as the East Bengal coach for the last few days, rained down as Subhas Bhowmick on Monday evening.
No, Khalid hasn't been removed as the East Bengal coach, but he will now have to share his decision-making powers with Bhowmick, who has been appointed as the technical director.
The decision was taken at Monday's executive committee meeting of the club.
After a longish meeting, which lasted for almost three hours, Kalyan Majumdar, the club secretary, said: "Subhas Bhowmick will be jointly operating with coach Khalid Jamil for the upcoming Super Cup. Both of them will be sharing equal power in decision-making for the team. This arrangement, for the time being, is only for this one tournament."
Bhowmick's last association with one of the Big Two of the Maidan was in 2014-15 when he was briefly the technical director of Mohun Bagan. He, however, didn't stay with Bagan for the entire season. The last time he had anything to do with East Bengal was way back in 2009-10.
When contacted, Bhowmick didn't want to speak much on the matter, but did say that he was honoured by East Bengal's decision. "I will have a discussion with the club officials on Tuesday and only after that will I be able to give my views. The club contacted me and have conveyed their decision. I am honoured... But let me first understand my role clearly and only then will I speak," Bhowmick said.
The other notable development to come out of Monday's meeting was that Manoranjan Bhattacharjee would no longer be the team manager.
