New Delhi: Virender Sehwag was one of the most fearsome batsmen during his playing days. Off the field, too, he is known for his bold comments on issues relating to the game.
It was no exception, on Tuesday, during the jersey launch function of Kings XI Punjab. Currently, the director of cricket operations of the franchise, Sehwag, once a champion batsman himself, said he always preferred a bowler to lead a side.
Defending Ravichandran Ashwin's appointment as the Kings XI captain, Sehwag said: "I have always felt a bowler-captain can win you more games. If eight, 10 or 15 runs are needed in the final over, only a bowler can you win that game.
"The way a bowler-captain thinks, he can also help other bowlers on the field during crucial moments. That is why I am a great fan of Kapil Dev, Imran Khan as captains. Under them, India and Pakistan had won World Cups. Even Wasim Akram was a great captain," Sehwag said.
The former India opener made it clear that the present Kings XI squad is perhaps the strongest in the IPL history and are top contenders for the title.
"The kind of team we have this year, we can win the title," said Sehwag.
"We have spent a lot of money on some of the players. Hopefully, they will do the job. This surely is the best Kings XI team in the last 10 years," was Sehwag's prompt reply when asked whether franchise could end their title draught this season.
Sehwag said an IPL team should have at least four-five good India players to succeed in the T20 tournament. "This time, we have quite a few good Indian players," he said.
Sehwag was obviously referring to players like Ashwin, Lokesh Rahul, Karun Nair and Akshar Patel. There is also Mayank Agarwal.
"In the last few years, our Indian players were not that good except Wriddhiman Saha and Akshar. If you want to win the IPL, you have to have good Indian players," he said.
Sehwag also defended the inclusion of seasoned campaigners Yuvraj Singh and Chris Gayle in the squad.
"It is great that they have come to us at their base price. It is surely a bargain. Who knows if there were more bidders, they could have gone as high as $ 1 million.
"They are big names and match winners, even if they win two-three games for us, we would get the return on investment," Sehwag said.
