A new breed of theatre artistes got a platform to showcase their talent at Kalakaar, the maiden theatre festival of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, which concluded on March 31. In the mono-acting play category, a team from Hansraj College of Delhi University won the first prize of Rs 40,000. The second (Rs 20,000) and third prizes (Rs 10,000) went to the host university and city-based Gandhi Institute for Technology respectively. In the Nukkad-Natak section, KIIT Dramatics Society bagged the first position and won a cash prize of Rs 20,000. Dramatist Lalit Mohan Tiwary distributed the prizes.

Youth festival

Charisma-2013, a three-day youth festival of Balasore College of Engineering and Technology, provided an opportunity for students to indulge in unlimited fun. High energy, creativity and imagination were palpable on the campus as the youngsters took part in activities such as dance, music, drama, ramp show, bodybuilding and sports. The winners were honoured on the final day.

Best cadets

The NCC Group, Sambalpur, honoured its high-performing cadets at a function organised at the local NCC Officers’ Mess. Bhadab Kumar Hembram of Rourkela Municipal College and Shelly Mehta of S.D. Women’s College, Rajgangpur, were adjudged best cadets in the senior division (boys) and senior wing (girls), respectively. They received a cheque of Rs 3,500 each. Subodh Padhy of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sambalpur, and Pragyan Parimita Panda of Vikash Residential School, Bargarh, won the best cadets in junior division (boys) and junior wing (girls) category, respectively. These cadets were selected on the basis of their performance in the best cadet competition and overall participation in NCC activities. Cadet Welfare Society gave away the prizes and Sambalpur NCC group commander Colonel Vikas Goswami handed the cheques.

Kick out trouble

Around 400 girl students from across the state learned to pack a punch and kick out trouble during a nine-day workshop at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. Keeping in view the rising incidents of crimes against women, the young participants were imparted tips in self defence. State commission for women chairperson, Lopamudra Buxipatra, attended the valedictory session as chief guest and said apart from social security provisions, the knowledge of self-protection techniques were imperative. She motivated the girls to be fearless and tackle assailants in adverse situations. The workshop was organised by the NSS wing of Council of Higher Secondary Education and sponsored by higher education department.

Blood donation

A record number of 520 units of blood were collected in a mega blood donation camp at Driems, Tangi. The students of diploma engineering and management wing donated 94 units while their counterparts in degree engineering courses donated 302 units. The trainees of ITC Wing gave another 124 units. The camp, organised in association with Central Red Cross Blood Bank of Cuttack, was inaugurated by Driems founder chairman Pramod Chandra Rath.

Social duty

HDF School of Management, Bhubaneswar, celebrated its annual cultural fest, Parab, by starting a student social responsibility (SSR) chapter that was inaugurated by state representative of United Nations Development Programme, Ambika Nanda. The SSR is conceptualised to be a voluntary association of students where they would implement various innovative community projects and social entrepreneurship in rural, remote areas of the state in association with local partners, as part of the summer internship programme.

Leadership virtues

Bhubaneswar-based voluntary organisation Centre for Child and Women Development hosted a youth camp to develop positive attitude among young social activists and turn them into responsible citizens with leadership qualities. The programme also focused on creating awareness on hygiene and sanitation in slum areas. Forty youths took part in the camp.
