Aizawl, Nov. 24: As Jenny Lalremliani of Mizoram inflicted punch after punch on her Swedish opponent at the fourth World Women’s Boxing Championships in New Delhi yesterday, Mizoram celebrated. The young pugilist’s first gold in an international event was also the state’s first world title in the discipline.
Soon after Jenny clinched gold in the 63-kg weight group, chief minister Zoramthanga convened a special cabinet meeting, congratulating her on behalf of the people. He also promoted her to the rank of deputy superintendent of police from the rank of inspector as a token of appreciation.
At a special programme aired by a local cable network last night, congratulatory calls kept pouring in.
Another Mizo girl from Manipur, M.C. Mary Kom, made a hattrick yesterday, claiming the world title for the third time.
“Jenny, who has made Mizos known to the world, deserves the highest honours,” a Mizoram Congress Party statement said, inviting the people of the state to welcome her at Lengpui airport when she returns from the capital.
“Jenny’s victory is an important milestone for the Mizos,” said the Mizoram Amateur Boxing Association, thanking the state government for its support.
The Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl, the state’s largest women’s group, said the victory had come as a giant leap for Mizo women and matched its theme of the year — women’s empowerment.
Apex student body Mizo Zirlai Pawl congratulated both pugilists and lauded the state’s decision to promote Jenny.
