Jorhat, Jan. 24: A newly floated socio-cultural organisation here is set to let the winds of cultural exchange flow between West Bengal and Assam with a Rabindrasangeet programme.
Biswa Bhora Pran, a 19-member troupe from Bengal, which specialises in Rabindranath Tagore’s songs and recitals, will perform at the district library auditorium here on February 7, organised by Setu — The Cultural Bridge.
President of Setu, Niren Sharma, said with the completion of 150 years of Tagore’s birth anniversary, being celebrated all over the country, it was only befitting to offer shraddhanjali to this Nobel laureate with a performance of his songs and recitals by some of the artistes of Bengal.
The prime objective of Setu is to open doors so that there is a cultural exchange. It also aims to showcase the state’s multifarious culture to other parts of India.
In keeping with its objective, a tribute will also be paid to late Bhupen Hazarika, a cultural icon, who played a big role in cementing Bengali-Assamese ties. Around 15 sitarists will perform on a song by Bhupen Hazarika.
Sharma said eventually other ethnic groups of the Northeast would be given a platform to showcase their culture in places outside the region and by this way their culture would get proper exposure. “There are many communities whose population has dwindled to such an extent that their cultures are almost dying out. We would like to show the rest of the country what we have to offer and in this regard the members of Biswa Bhora Pran have promised to help us in whatever way they can,” he said.
Likewise, groups from outside would be brought here as part of the cultural exchange agenda of Setu.
In the function, the Bengali group will also get a glimpse of Assamese culture in the form of a Xattriya dance performance. Jyotirmoy Das, a member of Setu, said their’s was a non-profit organisation and the entire show would be financed by the members.
Among those who would perform on the day are Srabani Sen, Subrata Sengupta, Partha Ghosh and Gauri Ghosh.
