Jorhat, May 7: Ajit Kumar Sarma, managing partner of the Janambhumi group of publications, one of the oldest newspaper houses in Assam, passed away at a private nursing home here this morning. He was 81.

Sarma, who was suffering from old-age ailments, is survived by his wife Anima and three daughters.

Born at Baligaon here in 1922, Sarma started his career as an engineer in Assam Oil Company in 1953 and soon rose to the position of chief electrical engineer. He was transferred to Oil India Limited, where he occupied several top positions before retiring as resident chief executive.

He took over as managing partner of the Janambhumi group of newspapers in 1995. Sarma, who always insisted on integrity in news reporting, was also a stickler for punctuality.

Relatives and well-wishers thronged Sarma’s Nehru Park residence in large numbers to pay homage to the departed soul. His funeral will take place tomorrow.
