Vice chancellor of Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) Gurdeep Singh has promised to beef up security and block entry of outsiders inside the campus that witnessed anarchy on Thursday when a students' protest against delayed publication of BEd results spiralled out of control.

Singh, who had alleged that outsiders played a crucial role in fomenting trouble during the unrest and molested girls and teachers, said on Friday that he would request police to ensure security on the premises for a few days till the university authorities came up with a foolproof action plan.

"At present, we have 30 private security guards, but they are beaten up by the so-called students' leaders a number of times. A survey is going on and we will install CCTV cameras all around the campus to keep an eye on the hooligans," the vice chancellor added.

He maintained a tough stand against entry of outsiders inside the 66-acre campus located at Sindoor off NH-33 in Hazaribagh town. "From now on, we will allow in only students after checking their identity cards issued by the departments concerned. I am also serious about organising students' union elections to bring an end to outsiders meddling in university affairs," Singh stressed.

VBU doesn't have any students' union, but members of students' wings of various political parties try to call the shots on the campus.

Thursday's agitation was spearheaded by the Congress's NSUI, but its leaders Prakash Yadav and Deepak Kumar, who had begun a fast-unto-death, are not students of the university.

"Outsiders do politics in the name of students. They have nothing to do with VBU affairs. When I joined VBU in 2014, a student leader had threatened me with a revolver," the vice chancellor said.

A number of girl students enrolled in postgraduate programmes and professional courses also conceded "outsider menace", saying youths from outside start pouring into the campus since morning and spent their time passing lewd comments at them.

"There is absolute security breach here. Anyone can enter the campus. Eve-teasing is very common" said a student on condition of anonymity.

Another added they were not in a position to speak against the these trouble-mongers as many of them had criminal background.

The nuisance has been compounded by the fact that people taking the NH-33 use the road cutting through the campus to reach Hazaribagh lake area in town.

"Commuters want to avoid the busy NH-33 and opt for the 2km-long road that takes them straight to Lake Road. This has to be stopped as this gives safe passage to hooligans," said an official.
