Jamshedpur, Sept. 10: Jhano Hansda looked her usual self this morning, apparently not overwhelmed by yesterday’s feat.
The 30-year-old resident of Ranidih, who beat the world record of Jamie Van Natta (US) in the compound section by scoring 1405 points in the final selection trials for the national squad at the JRD Tata Sports Complex yesterday, said she had an inkling that something positive was going to happen.
“Yes, the feeling was good. And that is the reason I managed to better the world record. In fact, I had this feeling prior to the selection trials,” said Jhano, who is still “job-hunting”.
Jhano, who switched over from recurve to compound division in July 2004 added, that she has submitted her papers to the government. She has been offered the post of deputy superintendent of police under the sports quota. “Let’s see how things unfold. But I’m desperate to work. After all, I’m not young,” she quipped.
Asked about her next target, Jhano said she does not believe in setting targets.
“I try hard and leave things to destiny. But switching over to compound division has certainly helped me prolong my career,” she pointed out.
The modest archer, who broke the record of Valerie Fabre of France in the national ranking archery championship in August last year, added that she was confident of giving international archers a run for their money.
“Better equipment and more exposure tours will make a big difference in the performance of Indian archers,” Jhano remarked.
Jhano, who was earlier employed on a contractual basis with Tata Steel, has performed extremely well after taking up compound archery.
She claimed bronze in the Asian Circuit Championship in Vietnam (November, 2004) before pocketing silver in the same meet, organised this time at Bangkok in February 2005.
Jhano claimed silver in the World Cup in June this year. She ranked second in the world, after this feat. But the medal-winning journey did not end here.
The successful archer, who is trying to learn English, bagged gold in the Asian Championship in Delhi in 2005, before claiming the team silver in the World Cup in Crotia earlier this year.
She is currently ranked fourth in the world in compound division.
Jhano has emerged as a shining example for several aspiring archers in Jharkhand.
