Shimla (PTI): Himachal Pradesh minister and former Union minister Sukh Ram's son Anil Sharma on Sunday quit the Congress government and joined the BJP.
The state will vote on November 9 and the exit of Sharma, who claimed he was being "sidelined", is seen as a jolt to chief minister and Congress poll face Virbhadra Singh. Sharma said the BJP had given him a ticket from Mandi, a family bastion he has represented for 10 years and his father from 1962 to 1984.
Sharma claimed a Congress general secretary had invited Sukh Ram to a recent Rahul Gandhi rally in Mandi but on reaching there, he was asked not to attend. "Is Sukh Ram not a Congress member? I wasn't included in any poll panel. When I asked the HPCC president, he said my name was deleted at the higher level. This hurt me and I decided to quit."
Virbhadra downplayed Sharma's exit. "I had information he will join the BJP. It will not impact the Congress."
Sukh Ram was Union communications minister when his name surfaced in a telecom scam and cash worth over Rs 3 crore was seized from his Delhi home. He was expelled and rejoined the Congress before the 2004 Lok Sabha polls.
