Guwahati, April 9: Asam Sahitya Sabha general secretary Paramananda Rajbongshi is set to resume duties in May.

"Rajbongshi will resume work in May. He was requested to assume duty from today itself. But he decided to postpone till May because of some problem," said a Sabha official.

Though the president is the most revered person in the Sabha, it is the general secretary who plays the key role in its functioning, including organising events and sessions to communicating with organisations and individuals.

Rajbongshi had "temporarily" relinquished his post on January 8 following widespread criticism. Since then, Abani Mohan Saharia had been working as the general secretary (in-charge) of the Sabha.

Rajbongshi relinquished his post when his name got involved in the suicide of a former Sabha employee and after several organisations protested his participation in the Sabha's centenary celebration in Upper Assam's Sivasagar district in February.

Rajbongshi's comeback was accepted at an executive meeting at a school in Changsari on the outskirts of the city today.

Sources said the Sabha's former president, Dhruba Jyoti Borah, has also written to Saharia expressing his wish to resume office till the end of the term of the present executive body.

However, the executive meeting today rejected his request and decided that Prahlad Chandra Tasa will continue as president (in-charge) till its session in Bordumsa in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district next year.

The term of the current executive body will end when a new elected executive body takes charge.

Borah had resigned in December last year when Rajbongshi had ignored his repeated requests to resign.

The Sivasagar centenary session went ahead without the participation of Borah and Rajbongshi.

When Rajbongshi tried to enter the session venue despite opposition, he was assaulted by a group of people. Borah was also in the same convoy with Rajbongshi on the day.

On the other hand, the executive body reconstituted a three-member election committee to hold the polls. The election process will begin from May 1.

The executive body decided that the 2020 session of the Sabha will be held at Kamalpur in Kamrup district.
