Srinagar: Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti's brother Tassaduq stumbled as he took oath as a minister on Thursday, swearing in the name of "dog" before quickly correcting himself.

His gaffe, however, wasn't the only point on which the ruling alliance faced attacks: the Opposition asked why the BJP was silent about "dynasty politics" in the People's Democratic Party.

A cinematographer turned politician, Tassaduq is only a year old in politics, a profession his family has pursued for decades.

He was sworn in along with party MLA Javed Mustafa Mir in the state's winter capital, Jammu. "I, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti, swear in the name of dog... God," he said as governor N.N. Vohra administered the oath.

The audience, which included the chief minister and other senior ministers, ignored the blunder but the video of the ceremony soon went viral, with the Opposition having a laugh at Tassaduq's expense.

"Befitting start! God help the departments his sister will gift to him. God help J&K!" tweeted National Conference spokesperson Junaid Azim Mattu. Mattu's party colleague Sajjad Shaheen termed Tassaduq's blooper "disgusting".

"The first ever minister in the history of mankind, the son of Mard-e-Momin, Mr Tassaduq Mufti takes oath by swearing in the name of 'Dog'," Shaheen wrote on Facebook.

Mehbooba had recently described her father, former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, as "Mard-e-Momin" (a flawless man or a perfect believer), attracting derision.

Ordinary social media users too tore into the Muftis, whose popularity has dipped following the death of about a hundred people in last year's unrest.

State Congress chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir alleged that though the BJP made "dynastic rule" an issue in every election, it turned a blind eye to the practice when an ally resorted to it.

"Over two dozen relatives of Mehbooba are directly or indirectly running the affairs of the state," he said.

Mehbooba became chief minister last year after her father's death. Many of her relatives are in government or in the party, including her uncle Sartaj Madni who is PDP vice-president. Mehbooba is party president.

The PDP used to earlier attack the National Conference for "dynastic rule", citing how Omar Abdullah, his father Farooq Abdullah and grandfather Sheikh Abdullah had served as chief ministers
