Copter crash

Srinagar, Oct. 30: An Indian Air Force helicopter crashed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district this afternoon.

Defence officials said the four crew members on board were missing but sources said they were feared dead. The crash occurred during a routine sortie.

The crash came after the Indian Army killed a suspected Pakistani soldier and a militant during an infiltration attempt in Kupwara aided by covering fire. Army sources said they had found a Pakistani army identity card on the bodies of one of the two intruders. “The card belongs to sepoy Zuhaib Ayaz of the Pakistani army’s Punjab regiment,” an official said. The death or arrest of Pakistani soldiers on this side of the LoC is rare.

AMU closed

Lucknow: Aligarh Muslim University authorities have decided to shut down the institute after protests against the murder of a student disrupted academic activities for a week. Vice-chancellor Abdul Aziz said the step was taken to protect varsity property and maintain peace at the institution. Students at the AMU hostel have been asked to vacate their rooms.

Batla plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has rejected a plea for an independent probe into Delhi’s Batla House encounter in which two Muslim youths were shot dead by police last year, saying “criminals were criminals” and should not be “associated with any particular religion”. “It will only lead to harassment of some more innocent people,” the court said.

AIIMS clones

New Delhi: The proposed AIIMS-class super-speciality medical institutions in six states will each have 960-bed hospitals and are expected to be ready to deliver services in about two years, the health ministry said on Friday. Each institution will take in 100 students into the undergraduate medical course.

Gangster held

Lucknow: An Uttar Pradesh gangster who allegedly had ISI links has been arrested in Mumbai. Munna Bajrangi is a suspect in the murder of a Delhi police “encounter specialist”.
