Chennai, July 23 (PTI): Three patients died of asphyxiation at a government hospital in Chennai after a fire broke out in its ICU early today.

Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa said she had ordered that officials concerned take preventive steps in all government hospitals. She also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the dead.

Kalmadi plea

New Delhi: Suresh Kalmadi filed a petition before a court on Saturday for permission to attend the monsoon session of Parliament, saying he is a “people’s representative and has a larger role to play in the polity of the nation as an MP”. Kalmadi is in Tihar jail in connection with the Commonwealth Games scam.

Blast toll

Mumbai: The death toll in the July 13 blasts climbed to 23 after three persons injured in the attacks died at two Mumbai hospitals within 72 hours. Sripal Mujapura, a 35-year-old diamond merchant, died at Harkissondas Hospital, while Sundar Singh Bisht, a peon, and Ajay Verma passed away at JJ Hospital.

Mammooty

Kochi (PTI): Income tax officials, who had conducted raids at the homes and offices of Malayalam superstar Mamooty, questioned him for nearly seven hours till early Saturday morning. The actor “cooperated fully with the officials”, sources said. I-T officials had a day earlier raided homes and offices of Mammooty and Mohanlal.
