FORMER HIGH COURT CHIEF JUSTICE DEAD

Calcutta, June 21 :     Sambhu Charan Ghose, former chief justice of Calcutta High Court, died this morning in a city nursing home. He was 78. Ghose was born in 1920 to a family of renowned lawyers in Jorasanko. After completing his education from Hindu School, Presidency College and Calcutta University where he obtained a Masters degree in English, he went to England where he was called to the Bar in 1948 from Grays Inn. Later, he enrolled himself as an advocate and began practice at Calcutta High Court. He was elevated to the bench in 1966 and retired as chief justice in 1983. Ghose remained active till his demise. He was chairman of the Settlement Advisory Committee, UCO Bank. His activities included very close associations with cultural and philanthropic bodies. He was a member of the Ramakrishna Mission and president of the governing bodies of Rahara Ramakrishna Mission Balashram and Vivekananda Centenary College. Ghose married Sabita in 1946. He is survived by four sons and a daughter. His second son, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, is a sitting judge of Calcutta High Court. The members of the High Court Bar Association, Bar Library Club and Incorporate Law Society in their meetings took separate resolutions to remain absent in court rooms today to pay homage to the former chief justice.
