Flyover crash kills 25 in PM's seat
Lucknow: At least 25 people were crushed to death in Varanasi on Tuesday when an under-construction flyover in the Prime Minister's Lok Sabha constituency collapsed on the city's busiest road.
Since the road had not been blocked to commuters while construction work was on, at least 20 vehicles were crushed, including a bus and six cars. At least 30 people are feared trapped in the rubble.
Police and rescue teams reached the site a full 30 minutes after the crash, at 6.10pm. Heavy equipment like earth-movers were brought at 7pm.
Many people could be seen trapped in the cars. Helpless, people gathered at the site raised slogans against the government for the delay. The National Disaster Response Force camp and the cantonment area are less than 3km away.
Denying any delay, police chief O.P. Singh said: "We ordered the NDRF team immediately to reach the spot."
The administration put the toll at 18, citing the bodies rescue workers had counted. But residents said seven bodies were pulled out before the rescue teams arrived.
