Calcutta: Mamata Banerjee has offered to support the Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi as a Rajya Sabha candidate from Bengal, delivering a masterstroke that clouds efforts by sections in the state Congress and CPM to work towards unity.

The Left and the Congress in Bengal had been trying for over a fortnight to find an apolitical, consensus candidate but no name was zeroed in on till Friday. Monday is the last date for filing nominations ahead of the March 23 elections.

"Singhvi is an eminent lawyer. He and Kapil Sibal have represented our government in many cases. We have decided to support Singhvi's candidature from Bengal," Mamata siad.

Trinamul has guaranteed victories in four seats, with the ability to turn the results for the fifth vacancy. Trinamul named four of its own candidates and then offered support to Singhvi.
