Death due to 'drowning in bathtub'
Sridevi fainted: Dubai police
Mumbai: Actress Sridevi died after she fainted and drowned in the bathtub of her hotel room, the Dubai government said on Monday afternoon and handed over the case to a prosecution magistrate.
A document that was variously described as a forensic report as well as a death certificate by media outlets in Dubai had earlier said her death was due to "accidental drawning (sic)".
The official statement eventually tweeted by the Dubai government's media office as well as Dubai police did not mention the word "accidental".
"Following the completion of post mortem analysis, Dubai police headquarters today stated that the death of the Indian actress Sridevi occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment's bathtub following loss of consciousness," the government's media office and the police tweeted.
The repatriation of the body has been delayed because the police had transferred the case to the "Dubai Public Prosecution", which, the police said, would "carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases".
A blizzard of speculation kept many Indians hooked to television screens where conflicting versions exploded by the hour. At one point, it was reported that Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor was questioned for 18 hours and then cleared to leave the police station. Soon, a Dubai newspaper rubbished the version, saying only a testimony was taken from him on Sunday morning.
The purported forensic report or death certificate uploaded by the media in Dubai, which cited accidental drowning as the cause of death, had a stamp of the "Ministry of Health UAE" and the director of preventive medicine, Dubai, Dr Sami Wadie. The document also mentions the actress's full name, "Sreedevi Boney Kapoor Ayyappan", her passport number and the date of the incident.
Family sources were quoted as saying on Sunday that Sridevi, 54, suffered a "cardiac arrest" - which cannot be disputed because all deaths involve a cardiac arrest that is different from a heart attack. The causes of a cardiac arrest can be multiple. At least one relative had suggested a "heart attack" but Dubai police made no such mention.
Unconfirmed reports in the Dubai media said the autopsy had found traces of alcohol in her blood. The reports added that the actress had not stepped out of the hotel room for two days.
