New Delhi: The Congress on Monday opposed the move to release convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said: "The Centre has instructed the Tamil Nadu governor to release Rajiv Gandhi's assassins. State governments friendly to the BJP are protecting extremists. Is this the new state policy?"

Asked about the stands taken by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, who had forgiven the culprits, Surjewala said, "Who says what is their personal opinion. Irrespective of what they said, the Congress is of the view that the state cannot do dereliction of its duty by releasing the assassins.... Security personnel and other persons were killed. How can the convicts be freed?"
