Rajasthan's Vasundhara Raje-led BJP administration has asked government colleges to organise essay and extempore speech contests on its flagship schemes to celebrate four years in power next month.

The order issued by the higher education department to the principals last week directs them to widely publicise the competitions and submit a one-page report along with photographs and videos of the events. The government will complete four years on December 13.

The principals have been asked to organise the contests at the district level and hand out awards to the winners. Thirty-three college have been designated nodal centres and their principals asked to ensure that both contests, the essay and the extempore speeches, are held by December 20.

The topics for the essay competition are based on two of the schemes, Bhamashah Yojana for direct transfer of state benefits to recipients' accounts, and the Mukhyamantri Jal Swavlamban Yojana related to water management.

For the extempore speech, the topics are Mukhyamantri Rajshri Yojana, Annapurna Rasoi Yojana, Rajasthan Sampark Yojana and other schemes. Other flagship schemes can also be included, the order said.

Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot dubbed the order an act of "sheer desperation" by the chief minister and said it forced young students to appreciate government programmes.

"I'm against it and condemn the order. It must be withdrawn immediately," Pilot said . PTI
