Cleric law board alternative

Lucknow: Sunni cleric Salman Husaini Nadvi announced on Thursday the formation of the Humanity Welfare Board as a "genuine alternative" to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, from which he has been removed for favouring a negotiated solution to the Ayodhya dispute.

"The board will have committees for social reform, legal assistance, medical health, women's rights, children's rights and a Shariah application bench," he said at a news conference.

Indicating that he would try to coordinate with the government, Nadvi said: "The Muslim kings in olden days used to give the status of judge to kazis.

"This should again be started so that the kazis appointed by the court resolve cases related to personal law, including talaq."

Criticising those who are opposed to a negotiated settlement of the Ayodhya dispute, Nadvi suggested that they "learn to become human first and then only sit in a temple, a church or a mosque".
