Calcutta: A six-month-old girl died after slipping off the arms of her mother, who had the baby in one hand and a bag in the other, on an escalator in Calcutta airport on Saturday.
Khushi Soni, who banged her head on the steel floor of the escalator, suffered a broken neck bone and head injuries and was bleeding from the ear. She died in hospital a few hours later.
Khushi and parents Dinesh and Sangeeta were about to board a 6.20am SpiceJet flight to Silchar where Dinesh, a CRPF jawan from Rajasthan, is posted.
Airport officials said the couple had taken their boarding passes and cleared the security checks. Around 5.30am, they set off for boarding gate No. 23A, which requires passengers to descend from the departure level to the arrival level and ride a bus to the plane.
"Sangeeta had Khushi in one hand and a bag in another. While going down the escalator, Khushi slipped off her mother's arms. Her head banged on the escalator floor," an airport official said.
After the accident, Khushi was taken to an airport health unit run by Medica hospital. "She was bleeding from her ear and had no pulse," a doctor said.
The baby was then taken to a local private hospital but it allegedly refused admission, saying it was not equipped to treat such a critical patient.
Khushi was taken to Apollo Hospitals off EM Bypass around 6.45am. She was kept on ventilation but died after a cardiac arrest caused by her injuries around 8am, hospital sources said.
"She came with a thick bandage on her head and was extremely pale. We could not conduct any examination on her," said Dr Parthasarathi Bhattacharya, the paediatrician who had seen the girl at the emergency.
