New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's ashes will be immersed in 100 rivers across the country and prayer meetings organised in Delhi, state capitals, district headquarters and panchayats, the BJP has announced.

The ashes immersion programme will start with the Ganga at Haridwar on Sunday in the presence of BJP president Amit Shah, Union home minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and Vajpayee's family members.

BJP general secretary Bhupendra Yadav said an all-party prayer meeting - with the participation of the public - would be held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi on August 20.

It will be followed by a similar event on August 23 in Lucknow, which Vajpayee represented in the Lok Sabha, before the ashes are sprinkled over the Gomti.

"Respected Vajpayeeji had a special bonding with Lucknow," Yadav said.

The elaborate programme of ashes immersion and prayer meetings is being seen as an effort by the BJP to milk Vajpayee's passing for sympathy and political mileage.

Among the "holy rivers" where the ashes will be immersed are the Sabarmati, Narmada, Tapti, Mahanadi, Brahmaputra, Godavari, Meenachil and Jhelum.

Vajpayee was cremated with full state honours at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal near the Yamuna's banks on Friday.
