Puducherry, Jan. 20 (PTI): The AIADMK said on Saturday it would seek the disqualification of ruling Congress and DMK legislators in Puducherry for holding offices of profit, with the Election Commission having used this tag to recommend removal of 20 Aam Aadmi Party members of the legislative assembly in Delhi.

A. Anbalagan, leader of the legislature wing of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, said the Election Commission’s decision to use the office-of-profit axe should apply to Puducherry, since several MLAs are also chairman of government—owned undertakings or as parliamentary secretary, he said.

”The development in New Delhi is directly applicable to Puducherry where the legislators belonging to the ruling Congress and its ally the DMK are holding 'office of profits' such as chairmen of government-owned undertakings and Parliamentary Secretary,” he alleged.

Anbalagan said the AIADMK would give 15 days to the MLAs ”to relieve themselves of posts of chairmen and Parliamentary Secretary so as to remain only as legislators as my intention is not to disturb them.”

The party would send a petition to the commission if they miss the deadline.

While one Congress MLA is parliamentary secretary to Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, two DMK and five Congress members are chairmen of statutory bodies here.

On Friday, the Election Commission had recommended to the President the disqualification of 20 MLAs of the ruling AAP for holding offices of profit, although the AAP claims they are working without remuneration or benefits.
