Chopper crashes

Mumbai, Nov. 4 (PTI): A Pawan Hans helicopter with two pilots on board crashed into the Arabian Sea minutes after take-off from an ONGC platform this evening, defence sources said.

The chopper took off at 7.12pm and contact was lost eight minutes later, an official said. Rescuers have sighted a door of the chopper, about 82 nautical miles off the south Mumbai coast, sources said. There were no passengers on board.

Vadra officer

Chandigarh (PTI): Haryana's BJP government has dropped a 2013 chargesheet the Congress regime had issued against IAS officer Ashok Khemka. The chargesheet had accused him of exceeding his jurisdiction in cancelling the mutation of a land deal between a firm owned by Robert Vadra and DLF.

Liquor anger

Vellore (PTI): A teenage girl on Wednesday waved a liquor bottle during a campaign of DMK leader M.K. Stalin in Vellore, seeking an assurance that prohibition would be implemented if his party comes to power in the Assembly elections next year. The girl told Stalin that she had lost her father to the "evil of alcohol consumption".

Crop burning

New Delhi (PTI): The National Green Tribunal hon Wednesday asked Delhi and four northern states to notify steps to check the menace of crop burning as it voiced concern over high pollution levels and thick smog engulfing the capital.

Hindi reach

Washington (PTI): Hindi has emerged as the largest Indian language spoken in the US, with nearly 6.5 lakh people speaking it, according to the latest census data. Top languages other than English spoken in US homes include Spanish, Chinese, French and German. Among Indian languages, Hindi is followed by Urdu and Gujarati.

BJP leader

Varanasi (PTI): A BJP councillor was shot dead by bike-borne assailants in Varanasi on Tuesday. Shiv Seth, 40, was on his way home when he was shot in the back and temple. Seth was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
