Pipe leak triggers cave-in

More than half the width of the north-bound flank of CR Avenue, near its crossing with Mahatma Gandhi Road, was blocked on Tuesday to facilitate repair of a leak in an underground water line. Sources said the Calcutta Municipal Corporation would also clean the underground sewer in that part before levelling the road.A police officer said a depression was spotted on the road on Saturday morning. Civic engineers dug up the affected part and discovered the leak in the water line. The portion will remain blocked on Wednesday, too. Picture by Biswarup Dutta
