Teenager rescued

Siliguri, Aug. 25: A 16-year-old Bagdogra girl has been rescued from the Govindpuri area in New Delhi where she was taken by traffickers on the pretext of giving her a job.

The girl was rescued by Delhi police yesterday with the help of Shanki Vahini and Kanchanjunga Uddhar Kendra, NGOs working against human trafficking. One person was detained by the police.

Ivory seized

Siliguri: Foresters arrested four persons from the Jalpai More area here on Monday night and recovered four pieces of ivory weighing 1.5kg from them. The four, all hailing from South Dinajpur district, were remanded in 14 days' judicial custody by the chief judicial magistrate's court in Jalpaiguri on Tuesday. The officers of Baikunthapur forest division made the arrest after a tip-off.

Driver killed

Kalimpong: Prakash Rai, a resident of Rambi Bazar in Kalimpong subdivision, died when the truck he was driving skidded off NH10 between Melli and Bhalukhola and fell about 60ft into a gorge on Tuesday morning. The body of the 44-year-old was sent to the Kalimpong subdivisional hospital for post-mortem. The truck was going from Siliguri to Gangtok.
