2 killed in factory blaze
Two men who were working at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mahestala, on the southern fringe of the city, were charred to death after a fire broke out on Wednesday. The victims have been identified as Debabrata Mandal, 42, and Suman Das, 19.
The fire was caused by a short circuit, fire department officers said. A fire tender took 30 minutes to douse the flames. The unit was being run at Mandal's house.
A 27-year-old youth died after the motorbike he was riding skidded off the road and rammed into a median divider near Sunny Park on Syed Amir Ali Avenue on Wednesday. Firoze Hussain, a resident of Tiljala Lane, was taken to a nursing home where he was declared dead on arrival, police said.
A 34-year-old man died after a tree fell on him in the Dapulatpur area of Mahestala around 7pm on Wednesday. The victim, Asraf Ali, was a tailor by profession, police said.
The body of a man was found beside the railway tracks near Belmuri station in Eastern Railway's Howrah-Burdwan section on Wednesday morning. A badge on his shirt suggested he was from Cooch Behar and returning home after attending the Trinamul rally on Tuesday. The Government Railway Police have contacted Trinamul leaders in Cooch Bihar in an attempt to identify the victim.
In another incident, the decomposed body of a man was found floating in the Hooghly near the NS Dock on Wednesday morning. The identity of the deceased could not be confirmed till late on Wednesday.
Police on Wednesday rescued a 16-year-old boy who had taken shelter at a temple in Bhowanipore after fleeing home at Amar Nagar, Mumbai.
According to the police, Vikash Dubay had been missing since June 26. A police team from Mulund, Mumbai, arrived in the city on Wednesday and took the boy in their custody. The teenager had apparently come to the city three weeks ago in search of a job.
