Calcutta, July 22: Power minister Manish Gupta today said the state government would stress on developing a dedicated feeder line to supply electricity to the agriculture sector.

A proposal in this regard was approved by the cabinet today. A sum of Rs 4,200 crore under a central scheme will be spent for this purpose. The Centre will shoulder 60 per cent of the amount while the state will have to pay the remaining.

BJP visit

Calcutta: A BJP team led by national general secretary Anil Jain and comprising Bengal co-minders Sidharth Nath Singh and Suresh Pujari and state unit president Rahul Sinha met governor Keshari Nath Tripathi for 35 minutes on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum on the alleged lack of safety of women and the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state. Singh said the governor "heard us and shared his concern".

Calcutta: The high court on Wednesday dismissed a petition moved by Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Sushanta Dattagupta challenging the legality of the showcause notice issued to him by the HRD ministry in connection with complaints of irregularities against him. Justice Tapobrata Chakrabarti said: "The judiciary should not intervene in the decision taken by a Union government ministry."

Asok barb

Siliguri: Siliguri mayor Asok Bhattacharya said on Wednesday that the state government was using the CID to shield board members of the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority during whose tenure the alleged funds scam took place. He said the CID chargesheet did not have the names of SJDA board members, most of whom are from Trinamul. IAS officer Godala Kiran Kumar has been arrested in connection with the scam.
