Shahid letter punch
Padmaavat has netted over Rs 100 crore in its first weekend at the box office after the fire in its path before release, and needless to say the team is celebrating.
Lead Deepika Padukone invited the media for lunch while Shahid Kapoor headed to a suburban theatre in Mumbai to meet the audience. Amid this came in a rather strong open letter from actress Swara Bhaskar, slamming director
Sanjay Leela Bhansali for not taking a progressive stand on the act of jauhar.
Shahid called it a rather “odd” move from the actress. The Woods reached out to the actor as he celebrated and he admitted that he had been taken aback by Swara’s letter.
“I don’t know what her issue is, and probably her issue is with Sanjay Sir. But I don’t think this is the time… Padmaavat is representing the entire film industry and its right to freedom of speech and expression. This has been a very tough battle to be able to take the film to the audience. At such a time, when I think the film industry is with us, it is a little odd that people are writing something like this. But everybody has a right to say what they want…” said Shahid, who plays Rawal Ratan Singh in the film.
The actor did, however, add that he is yet to read the full letter. “I think it is a long letter and right now we
are pretty busy with other things,” he said.
For Shahid, the Padmaavat collections will easily be the highest he has seen in his 15-year career. The highest he has gone at the box office till now was Rs 64 crore that R... Rajkumar earned in 2013. With Padmaavat, he will not only be stepping into the Rs 100-crore club but has chances to touch the Rs 200-crore club even.
“It is overwhelming. There are places in the country, big states, where the film has not been able to make a good start. Despite that and the fear that was in people’s mind, the film has done really well at the box office,” gushed the elated actor.
