Have it in you to wield the megaphone? The time has come to prove it. UTV World Movies has announced a short film contest for which entries will be accepted till March 20.

The contest will be judged by Raj Kumar Gupta whose last outing was No One Killed Jessica, Paresh Mokashi of Harishchandrachi Factory fame, and Sooni Taraporevala, the director of Little Zizou. “We are expecting response from both amateurs and professionals. Technology does not matter, originality does,” says Taraporevala.

Contestants need to upload their entries via a Youtube link on the UTV World Movies website www.utvworldmovies.com. “The duration has to be 10 minutes or less,” she says.

The theme of the contest, called Premier, is First Time Over. “It could be on the first time of anything. Were I to send an entry, I would make a film on the first time of judging a contest,” smiles Gupta, whose next film Ghanchakkar, a “comedy thriller”, will be “on the floors by June-July”, ahead of Rapchik Romance, for which he has finalised Myra Karn (who played Jessica) as the female lead.

Recalling his own start-up years, the two-film-old director points out how difficult it is to get financiers on the same page as one’s vision. “Even then, there were several first-timers in 2008 when I debuted with Aamir,” says Gupta, “One must believe in one’s conviction. The break would come sooner or later.”

“There’s much more scope for short films abroad. It is great that a channel is providing a platform,” says Taraporevala, who has scripted many of Mira Nair’s films.

The best entries will be showcased on UTV World Movies. The winners will also get to work with Paresh Mokashi in one of his projects.
