When did music started interesting you?

Music touched my heart when I was a kid. I was, in a way, lucky that my father is a Rafi saab’s admirer. So, I got to hear a lot of good music in my childhood. Later, I started learning music. I took music as a subject in my higher study in Welham Boys School, Dehradun. I used to play guitar on many evenings in the local barista shop with friends. I still do sometimes.

Ek mulakat song was quite a hit…

It was my first release. Honestly, when I had heard the composition, I was not sure whether I will be able to do justice to it as it was executed in a Sufi way. But, the composers Amjad and Nadeem showed lot of faith in me. So, I went ahead with it.

How was the experience meeting A.R. Rahman?

He was the first music director I met when I was 17. He had told me that I had a brilliant voice quality, but I should give it time to sound mature.

Future of independent singing…

It looks bright, and I think it is growing. When it blows up, it will open a lot of opportunities for the newcomers.

About your new song…

The song is called Humnawa mere, composed by Rocky-Shiv. It is about unrequited love and the expression of pain penned down by Manoj Muntashir. It was shot in Venice by Ashish Panda.
