| Indraneil in Angshumaner Chhobi |
Mumbai-based TV actor Indraneil Sengupta plays a filmmaker in his first Bengali release Angshumaner Chhobi. A t2 chat...
Was playing a filmmaker easy or tough?
It was tough. It was difficult to portray Angshuman, a restrained character. But I surrendered to Atanu (Ghosh, director). I trusted him to guide me. For the rest of the things, like handling the camera and other technicalities, I tried to follow the unit. I couldn’t workshop before the film as I couldn’t adjust my dates.
How did you bag the film?
I had met Atanu during a short visit to Calcutta and we had exchanged phone numbers. Later he got in touch with me to offer the role. I felt it would be challenging to play a film director. And I had heard all good things about Atanu, so I decided to be a part of the film.
Did you follow any particular filmmaker?
No, I didn’t have anyone on my mind. Atanu is open to suggestions and he gives very specific instructions to his cast, which are easy to follow.
You got to share screen space with Soumitra Chatterjee...
Yes, Soumitra Chatterjee is very helpful despite being such a senior actor. He would often give me suggestions.... Indrani (Halder) is a friend. Both of them are great co-actors.
Are you comfortable speaking in Bengali?
I am not very fluent because I was born and brought up in Ahmedabad and then I shifted to Mumbai for work. My Bengali is not polished. I learnt to speak it better while shooting Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Janala.
Do you get a lot of offers from Tollywood?
Not a lot. I get a few but whether I do a film or not depends on my availability. I am shooting Kaushik Ganguly’s Arekti Premer Galpo and it’s a very hectic schedule. I am not too keen on doing commercial films. I am consciously trying to do sensible cinema, that’s my main criterion.
Which Tollywood directors do you want to work with?
I don’t mind working with Buddhadeb Dasgupta again. I would love to do a film under Rituparno Ghosh’s direction. We are co-actors in Arekti Premer Galpo. Then there’s Goutam Ghose.... The list just goes on.
