September 29, Saturday brought in a treat for Bangla rock lovers with the finale of Kalyani Black Label (KBL) Bangla Rock War of the Rockstars at Nicco Park. The event kick-started with a performance by last year’s KBL winners, the Siliguri-based bilingual band Greenox. “Their song Neel akasher pakhi is a favourite of mine,” said Sidhu of Cactus, joining the band on stage.

Anchor Mir had the crowd in splits as he called individual winners to the stage. While Prosenjit Mitra of MO2 bagged the award for Best Keyboardist, the Best Guitarist prize went to Alter Karma and the Best Drummer prize was shared by MO2 and Atmahatya. The Khoj frontman bagged the Best Vocalist award.

MO2 of Siliguri was adjudged the winner while Escape Velocity and Atmahatya were declared first and second-runner-ups.

“Even though we didn’t win, this was a great platform,” said Atmahatya singer Debasish. Winners MO2 were ecstatic: “We were fifth the last time and it looks like our work has really paid off,” said Upal, the band’s singer.

Cactus rocked the crowds after the prizes were given out, in more than one sense of the term. The band quoted Queen’s We Will Rock You during crowd favourites like Rajar raja, Ami shudhu cheyechhi tomay and Juddho.

Performances by LRB, Fossils and MO2 followed. The Bangladeshi band’s set was easily the most anticipated of the day.

The winning band took home a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a Rs 100,000-contract with Saregama India Ltd. The label will also launch an album featuring the winners, the two runner-ups and the rest of the nine finalists, including Ethar, Yog, Evolution, Nishkraman, Khoj, Alter Karma, Loneranger and Voodoo.
