Traffic rejig in tech hub
Sector V: Several roads in Sector V will turn one-way only from Monday to ensure smoother traffic flow in the congested tech hub.
The traffic plan has been drawn up based on a study by experts from IIT Kharagpur in coordination with officials of the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) and the Bidhannagar Commissionerate's traffic wing.
The traffic rejig will be implemented in three phases.
The first phase will start on Monday with the imposition of one-way rules in and around EP and GP block of Sector V. These blocks have a number of restaurants, pubs and a shopping centre in addition to office buildings.
For vehicles entering Sector V from the Nicco Park intersection, one of the entry points into the EP and GP blocks will be through the crossing near the Infinity Think Tank building, adjacent to the Nalban Food Park. Such vehicles will reach the RDB Boulevard.
The second entry point will be through the lane adjacent to the Oxford University Press. Vehicles taking this route will be allowed to move towards the International Institute of Hotel Management.
Vehicles coming from Nicco Park can also enter the block through the crossing before College Intersection.
No-entry boards will notify motorists that they cannot enter the area from the crossings near Webel Bhavan and Sector V fire station.
All vehicles exiting the blocks will have to either use the road that leads to Webel Bhavan or the road that leads to Sector V fire station from RDB Boulevard.
"The study has been done keeping in mind that traffic is expected to increase manifold in the area in future," said Debashis Sen, chairman of NDITA.
According to a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate, the police will monitor the plan and tweak it if necessary. "We will get constant updates from personnel posted in the area," said the officer.
Once motorists become used to Phase I, the next two phases will be implemented.
