Sepoy dead in Manipur
Fort William/Palashipara: The body of Abhijit Mandal, an army sepoy killed in Manipur on Tuesday, reached Calcutta on Thursday afternoon.
Sepoy Mandal, 28, of the 28 Rajput Regiment was killed when a string of IEDs went off in Manipur's Chandel district while an army team was on an area domination exercise near the India-Myanmar border.
Mandal's brother, a jawan with the 19 Rajput Regiment, is posted in Gwalior.
"An officer from Manipur called me on Wednesday to convey the news of my son's death," Mandal's father Hirendra Nath Biswas said.
Around 4pm on Tuesday when the army team reached L. Bonjoy village, a number of IEDs went off, an officer at Eastern Command said.
A resident of Panchdara village in Nadia's Palashipara, Mandal had joined the army in 2012. He got married in December.
"It is unbelievable. He called me on Sunday night to say everything was normal and that he would return on March 11. Everything changed in two days," his wife Aninjita said.
