Poll cloud on exam dates

Calcutta: The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations is yet to announce the dates of the ISC and ICSE exams because of uncertainty over the election schedule in several states.

Around 2.50 lakh students are set to write the two exams.

"We are still waiting for the Election Commission to give us the expected time and date when the polls are to be held in some states in 2018. The council will announce the ICSE and ISC exam dates immediately after that," Gerry Arathoon, secretary and chief executive of the council, told Metro on Wednesday.

Assembly elections are likely to be held in at least four states in February and March.

Last year, the ISC (school-leaving) exams had started on January 30 instead of February 6, as announced earlier. The start of the ICSE (Class X) exams was deferred from February 27 to March 10. The dates had to be changed because they clashed with the poll schedule.

To avoid a repeat of last year's situation, the council had requested the poll panel to send it the election schedule in advance. "We want to finalise the exam dates only after knowing the poll schedule," a council official said.

For last year's exams, the council had announced the schedule on December 1, 2016.
