Man held for extortion attempt
Burtolla: Police arrested a former employee of a Camac Street jewellery store early on Wednesday on the charge of attempt to extort.
Cops picked up Bihari Lal Shaw, 32, from his Entally home around 3.30am based on a complaint filed by the jewellery store owner, Ravi Badalia.
Badalia, who lives in the Beadon Street area in Burtolla, alleged in his complaint that he had been getting calls demanding Rs 15 lakh.
"When he refused to give in, the caller apparently threatened to kill him," an officer in Lalbazar said.
Cops tracked down the number from which the calls had been made and found the SIM had been taken with forged papers, the police said. But cops zeroed in on Shaw through the IMEI number of the phone in which the SIM was active, the police said.
During investigation, cops found Badalia had sacked him six months ago.
The police have seized the phone and a SIM card that Shaw had apparently buried under a banyan tree close to Bidhan Market in Esplanade. Apart from sections of attempt to extort, cops have slapped charges of cheating and forgery on Shaw for using forged documents to get a SIM card.
He has been sent to police custody till January 12.
