Kona Expressway: At least 30 people, including seven women, were injured when the minibus they were on jumped the signal and hit a Matador on Kona Expressway on Thursday.

The minibus, headed to Burdwan, was ferrying people who had arrived in Calcutta to attend a Trinamul rally on the occasion of International Women's Day.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee was the main speaker at the rally on Mayo Road.

Around 3.45 pm, the speeding minibus on the Burdwan-Jamalpur route jumped the signal near Unsani crossing close to the Santragachhi rail overbridge, police quoted witnesses as saying.

The bus driver rammed into the loaded Matador and fled, the police said.

"The bus has been seized. We have started a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver," a Howrah police officer said.

Most of the injured are from Raina in Burdwan. While some suffered deep cuts on their forehead, a few had hand and leg injuries, the police said.

People of the area took the injured to Howrah State General Hospital.

Two women are in a critical state, a hospital doctor said.

People of the area blamed lax policing for the accident.
