RIL reaches milestone
Mumbai: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) on Tuesday said it has commissioned the world's largest refinery off-gas cracker (ROGC) complex at Jamnagar which will use refinery process residue to produce feedstock used to make petrochemicals.
The ROGC is part of RIL's $11-billion capital expenditure programme that it had announced in one of the largest brownfield expansion of energy and petrochemical projects globally.
RIL said in a statement that it has commissioned and achieved design throughput of the ROGC complex of 1.5 million tonnes capacity along with downstream plants and utilities.
The ROGC complex is an important component of RIL's world-scale J3 project at its integrated refinery and petrochemicals complex at Jamnagar.
Following the commissioning of the complex, the oil-to-telecom giant said it had completed the largest ever expansion of its petrochemicals portfolio.
The ROGC complex uses off-gases from RIL's two refineries at Jamnagar as feedstock.
According to RIL, this approach of integration with refineries provides cost advantage, making the project competitive compared with the crackers in West Asia and North America.
The ROGC complex is the latest addition to RIL's existing cracker portfolio, consisting of cracker facilities at Nagothane in Maharashtra and Hazira, Dahej and Vadodara in Gujarat.
There are nearly 270 ethylene plants globally with a combined capacity of over 170 million tonnes.
According to RIL, its combined ethylene capacity is now close to four million tonnes at five of its manufacturing sites. With ROGC, Reliance has one of the most competitive and flexible cracker portfolio.
Ethylene from ROGC is used in downstream plants to produce mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) and polyethylene.
"The world's first ROGC and downstream plants marks a paradigm shift in the profitability and sustainability of RIL's petrochemicals business," RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani said.
"The ROGC complex is built on our core philosophy of deep feedstock integration to establish industry leading cost and efficiency benchmarks," he added.
