New Delhi, June 2: Car sales rose in May after months of slump, which the industry attributes to improved consumer sentiment on account of a stable government at the Centre.

Car makers Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda and Ford reported good growth.

However, some others such as Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors India and Tata Motors reported a decline in their domestic sales during the month.

India’s largest car maker Maruti said its sales rose 16.4 per cent in May to 90,560 units from 77,821 units in May 2013. The growth came on the back of the higher sales of the Swift, Estilo and the latest entrant Celerio. The mini-segment, which includes the M800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR, saw a decline of 7.5 per cent in sales at 29,068 units against 31,427 units in the year-ago month.

Hyundai Motor reported a 12.8 per cent increase in sales at 36,205 units last month compared with 32,102 units in May 2013. Ford India said its sales jumped 51.24 per cent to 6,053 units in May against 4,002 units in the same month last year.

Honda Cars reported an 18 per cent jump in sales at 13,362 units against 11,342 units a year ago on the back of the success of the Honda Amaze and the all new Honda City.

The upswing wasn’t visible in the sales of M&M, which reported a 15.68 per cent decline at 35,499 units last month against 42,104 a year earlier.
