Aug. 12: Police arrested a former Trinamul councillor, who had recently switched over to the BJP, last night on the charge of cheating a Salt Lake resident in a land deal.
Cops arrested Anupam Dutta last night as soon as he stepped out of the airport after returning from Delhi.
Bidhannagar court sent Dutta - booked under 13 sections of the IPC, including cheating, forgery and criminal breach of trust - to five days' police custody.
Dutta, a resident of BD Block, was the longest-serving councillor of Bidhannagar municipality. In March, he joined the BJP in the presence of party president Amit Shah at a programme at Mahajati Sadan.
Dipti Sen of GC Block lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar North police station on July 3 accusing Dutta of cheating her.
She alleged that Dutta had introduced property dealer Madhusudan Chakrabarty to the family as his trusted aide and told them to get their house in BD Block sold through Chakrabarty.
Chakraborty, she alleged, forcibly took possession of the house in March 2015 by saying Sen's sister, the original owner, had willed the house in his name before her death in 2014.
Chakraborty promised them Rs 1 crore, saying a deal had been brokered with Nidhi Agarwal, Sen claimed in her complaint.
She said her family received Rs 69 lakh through cheques between 2015 and 2017.
"We will interrogate Dutta to find more about Chakrabarty," an officer of Bidhannagar North police station said.
