Patna, Aug. 10 (Agencies): The trust of Bihar’s 11 crore people has been broken, senior JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav said Thursday on his first trip here since fellow party leader Nitish Kumar sank the Grand Alliance government by pulling out and joining hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
“The trust of 11 crore people who gave mandate to form the Grand Alliance government in Bihar has been broken,” Sharad told reporters.
The Delhi-based Sharad, a member of the Rajya Sabha, is here for a three-day tour of the state during which he plans a “direct dialogue” with the people over the break up of the Grand Alliance between the JD(U), Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress.
When Nitish pulled the JD(U) out of the Grand Alliance last month and joined hands with the BJP to form a new government, Sharad had said it was a “betrayal” of the people’s mandate.
The Grand Alliance had swept to power in Bihar in the November 2015 elections with 178 seats, routing the BJP.
On Thursday, it was clear that the JD(U) was maintaining a distance from Sharad. Only a handful of JD(U) workers were at the airport to receive him, while large numbers of RJD supporters were present.
Ramai Ram, a senior JD(U) leader and former Bihar minister, was the big name present at the airport. Former RJD legislator Ram Badan Rai was also at the airport.
“The agreement of gatbandhan (Grand Alliance) was for five years which has been broken...I am hurt by this.” Sharad said.
Sharad, 72, said the Grand Alliance and the BJP had put out different manifestos for the state election and they were face-to-face. “It's for the first time in history of the country that the two manifestos of rival groupings have mingled.”
”I continue to stand for the gathbandhan,” he said.
Asked whether his trip did not amount to “anti-party activity”, Sharad, who is the leader of the JD(U) in the Upper House, said, “I do not want to make any comment.”
From the Patna airport, Sharad's convoy headed straight for Sonepur in Saran district. From there, he would go to Hajipur and stop at Muzaffarpur for the night.
According to his twitter post, he plans to visit the Muzaffarpur- Darbhanga- Madhubani stretch on Friday and Madhubani- Supual Madhepura the next day.
