CM cites Kajol tweet to flag fear

Raiganj, May 3: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee today made an indirect reference to actress Kajol to launch a scathing attack on the BJP over intolerance and cow vigilantism.

"Ami shocked holam. Ekta tweet dekhtey dekhtey ami dekhchhi.... Tar naam bola uchit na. Kono ekjon film star. Popular, khoob popular. Ami indirect bolchhi. Shah Rukh (Khan) er shongey obhinoy korechhey. Khoob popular (I am shocked. I saw a tweet... I should not take names. A certain film star. Popular, very popular. I am saying indirectly. This person has acted with Shah Rukh. Very popular)," Mamata told a public meeting in South Dinajpur's Buniadpur this afternoon.

On Monday, Kajol had issued a statement clarifying that the meat she was served at a friend's restaurant was the legally available "buffalo meat" and not beef after she was trolled for a video she had posted on Facebook. She also removed the video. Kajol, whose husband Ajay Devgn had campaigned for the BJP ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, said she was issuing the clarification because it was a "sensitive" matter that could "hurt religious sentiments", which was not her intention.

Mamata cited the episode to attack the saffron brand of Hindutva.

The chief minister said: "That person is saying in a tweet 'I had gone to eat in a place, the meat on my table was not beef, it was buffalo meat'.... Why did that person say this? Out of fear."

A Trinamul source later said: "These things drive home the perception that when stars are intimidated, the common man is helpless."

Addressing the meeting in South Dinajpur where minorities make up half the population, Mamata was relentless in her attack on the BJP.

"Some leaders are frequently coming from Delhi. They have no idea about Bengal and its culture. They are allying with the CPM here and trying to create tension," the chief minister said.
