Forgery cuffs on son

March 20: The son of a 62-year-old widow stands accused of forging his mother's signature, selling her house and driving her out.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Minati Nath, the Sonarpur police today arrested her son Monojit and the developer to whom the property had been "sold", Manas Mondal.

The elderly woman said she had been driven out of her home on Sunday and had to take shelter in a neighbour's house.

She mentioned in her complaint that Mondal had visited her a few days ago and claimed he had purchased the single-storeyed house.

"I was stunned to know that my house had been sold keeping me in the dark. Mondal showed me documents claiming he was the current owner of the house," she said. "Mondal showed my signature on the documents. I have not signed any deal related to the sale of my house."

The police said Minati used to live alone in the house since her husband's death a few years ago. Monojit, in his late 30s, lives separately with his family.

"She said her son had asked her several times to sell the house as local developers were offering lucrative deals. But the woman refused. She wanted to live in the house till the last day of her life," an officer of Sonarpur police station said.

Monojit has allegedly confessed to the crime.

"Monojit told us he had realised that Minati would never agree to sell the house. Desperate to cash in on the realty boom in the Sonarpur area, he plotted to sell the house with a deed bearing his mother's forged signature," an officer said.

The cops suspect a few people, other than Monojit and Mondal, were involved in the crime.
