Free books for Class X students

Calcutta, Nov. 16: The state government will provide free textbooks in three subjects to all Class X students in its Madhyamik schools from next year, education minister Partha Chatterjee said today.

The state will provide the books in first and second languages and in mathematics to Class X students. The facility has already started this year for Class IX students.

"We started providing free textbooks to Class IX students this year. The facility will be extended to Class X students from next year," Chatterjee said today while unveiling the Madhyamik sample papers, which also will be provided free to over 11 lakh aspirants.

The government had introduced the system of providing free textbooks in all seven subjects to students of Classes I, III, V and VII in 2013. In 2014, free books in all the subjects were introduced for students of Classes II, IV, VI and VIII.

Sources in the education department said over 24 lakh students studying in Classes IX and X in over 8,000 Madhyamik schools would benefit from the government plan. Each student is likely to save Rs 300.
