Sabha plea for chair after Neog

Guwahati, July 30: Asam Sahitya Sabha today requested Dibrugarh University and Gauhati University to create a chair in the name of scholar Maheswar Neog.

The Sabha will celebrate Neog's birth centenary year with a two-day programme from September 7 at Kamardaphiya village in Sivasagar where Neog was born on September 7, 1915.

The programme will be held in association with the Sivasagar unit of the Sabha. Neog passed away in 1995.

In a statement released to the media, Sabha's general secretary Paramananda Rajbongshi said Neog has not been honoured by Assamese society. He requested the state government as well as all other organisations to do something in honour of the scholar.

Sabha's publicity convener Debojit Bora said the recent second executive meeting of the Sabha at Jalah in Baksa district also discussed the issue and decided to appeal to both the universities to set up the chair in the name of Neog.

The Sabha on Tuesday announced that it would name its Central Research Assamese Studies, which has been set up in its Jorhat office after Neog. The Sabha will erect a statue of Neog in front of the office.

It has also decided to preserve all works of Neog in the centre.
