Leg-up from Ranbir

Ranbir Kapoor has said the students of Film and Television Institute of India who are protesting the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the Pune institute's chairperson deserve a "fair hearing".

The Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actor's black and white video was uploaded on YouTube by FTII students on Wednesday and billed as an interview.

The clip shows Ranbir as saying: "FTII is the breeding place of many filmmakers, cinematographers, editors and award-winning personalities. I think it gives an opportunity to a person without any film connection.... People look at a graduate from FTII with so much respect... and hearing about all the things that are happening now, I think it's only fair that students deserve a fair hearing."

With the comments, Ranbir became one of the first young actors to come out in support of the students.

"All they require is an aspirational figure, to look up to somebody with a large body of work... I don't think what the students are asking for is illogical," Ranbir says.

A small-time actor, Chauhan is best known for his portrayal of Yudhisthir in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat. (PTI)
