Gul Mohar - for schoolchildren, the word conjures images of a textbook they have grown up reading.
The series was recently relaunched to include text-mapped digital resource with audio support, slides and picture galleries, worksheets, a question bank and question paper generator, resources for practice of oral and aural skills and extra tasks for life skills.
"Gul Mohar is the first full-fledged English language teaching course to include works of Indian authors. It was a book published in India for local students," said Sonali Sengupta, the vice-president (sales) of Orient Blackswan, the publishers of the ELT (English Language Teaching) series.
So, Ruskin Bond, Romila Thapar, Chitra Padmabhan, R.K. Narayan, Vikram Seth, Sarojini Naidu and Jhumpa Lahiri share space with Charles Dickens, Jules Verne and William Blake, in this eight-part series.
"The book is not a prescribed text for any board but it covers the syllabus and thus is a favourite with many ICSE and CBSE schools till Class VIII," Sengupta said.
Gul Mohar is more than a textbook, it is a tradition, say the publishers. "Teachers who are teaching from Gul Mohar today have read it as students," Sengupta said.
The book sells more than a million copies across India and, not surprisingly, Orient Blackswan is known to many as the "Gul Mohar publisher"."Our flagship product is very special to us," signed off Sengupta.
