I know who I am, says angry Boya

Calcutta: “I felt insulted. This has never happened to me in my career. I know who I am,” fumed Pierre Boya, as he stormed out of the Salt Lake Stadium, about an hour after the match between Mohun Bagan and SAI (Eastern Zone), on Wednesday.

The reason behind the Cameroonian’s outburst was the fact that he was substituted in the 27th minute by Mohun Bagan technical director Subhas Bhowmick. The change, which saw Katsumi Yusa come in, was made just after Boya had missed a sitter.

An advancing Fatai Adisa had sent a lovely centre from the left, but Boya, in perfect position, came up with an unbelievable miss. It didn’t go down well with coach Shankarlal Chakraborty and Bhowmick and he was immediately replaced.

But to everyone’s surprise, Boya did not return to the bench. He kept walking and went straight to the dressing room where he stayed put till the match ended.

Boya later said: “I respect the technical team. But this is an insult to me.” Asked whether he was considering leaving the club, Boya answered in the negative. “I have just started my stint here. There is a lot to be done,” he said.

A senior Mohun Bagan official said the club would take a decision on Boya only after considering reports from Bhowmick and manager Sanjoy Ghosh. “The TD and manager were on the bench. I have asked them to submit a report regarding the incident. We need to consider what exactly happened, whether Boya had taken permission to leave the bench and what he did afterwards in the dressing room. Once we get the report, only then can the management act,” he said.

Boya has, till now, played five matches. He scored only once, against Kalighat MS. His performance has not really been up to expectations and there are rumours that the coaching team is not really happy with him.

Coach Chakraborty said after the match: “Like all players, Boya got emotional. He may have felt bad after he was taken off. We will sort things out after talks involving the TD and the management.”

The coach added: “Boya is a good player, but he needs to improve. Today, he could not play well so he was taken off.”
